 1. Basic knowledge of polishing

Polishing refers to the use of mechanical, chemical, or electrochemical effects to reduce the surface roughness of the products to obtain a bright and smooth surface. It is the use of polishing tools and abrasive particles or other polishing media to modify the surface of the products.

Polishing cannot improve the dimensional accuracy or geometric accuracy of the products but aims to obtain a smooth surface or mirror gloss. A polishing wheel is often used as a polishing tool. The polishing wheel is generally made of multiple layers of canvas or leather. The two sides are clamped by metal circular plates, and the rim is coated with a polishing agent that is uniformly mixed with micronized abrasives and grease.

During polishing, the high-speed rotating polishing wheel presses against the surface of the hardware product to produce rolling and micro-cutting on the surface, thereby obtaining a bright machined surface. The surface roughness can generally reach Ra 0.63 ~ 0.01 microns. When a non-greasy matting polishing agent is used, the shiny surface can be matted to improve the appearance.
 

 2. Two stages of polishing

 

Grinding

It is used to remove dirt, serious oxidation, fine scratches, and surface defects on the paint surface. Most of the process uses water sandpaper to remove surface defects.
 

Polishing

Polishing is to further smooths the surface after grinding. Remove the residual stripes of grinding, the polishing agent makes the surface gloss appear naturally.
 

 3. The Factors affecting the polishing quality

Since mechanical hardware polishing is mainly done manually, polishing technology is still the main reason that affects polishing quality.

In addition, it is also related to the mold material, the surface condition before polishing, and the heat treatment process.

High-quality steel is a prerequisite for obtaining good polishing quality. If the surface hardness of the steel is uneven or there are differences in characteristics, it will often cause polishing difficulties. Various inclusions and pores in the steel are not conducive to polishing.
